Gold Mine Collapse Leaves Four Dead in Zambia
According to police spokesperson Rae Hamoonga, the incident occurred Sunday afternoon when a pit wall at the New Scene Gold Mine gave way while the men were engaged in manual gold mining.
Rescue operations were immediately launched, but by the time responders reached the site, all four miners had already perished, Hamoonga confirmed in a statement posted on Facebook.
The identities of the deceased have been verified by local authorities.
Hamoonga once again urged the public to avoid involvement in illegal mining activities.
The discovery of valuable minerals like gold in various regions of Zambia has sparked a rise in unauthorized mining, despite government efforts to regulate the sector and promote legal small-scale mining through licensing.
